What are the new 3D Blu-rays
With the Blu-ray Disc Association finalizing it's Blu-ray 3D specifications, the 3D discs and players have started hitting the market. This article tries to explain how the discs work and what will be needed to view them.
The 3D specification uses Multiview Video Coding (MVC) for the 3D effect. MVC displays two separate 1080p pictures to each eye to create the 3D effect. However it takes only 50% more space on the disc. You will need to active shutter 3D glasses to see the 3D effect.
The 3D discs will be able to display in 2D, so you will be able to choose your viewing preference and your current HDTV and Blu-Ray player will be able to handle the new discs and in the future if you decide to upgrade, you will be able to see the 3D effect.
Playstation 3 is expected to be able to play full 3D content after a firmware update. There are already Blu-ray players announced which will be able to play the 3D Blu-rays. Other older Blu-Ray players may be able to display in 3D with a firmware update, but no such announcements have yet been made.
Unless you have bought the 3D capable TV, your current TV will not have the display capabilities necessary for the 3D Blu-Ray spec. However, when you do choose to upgrade your TV, you will be able to choose any display type you want (LCD, Plasma, OLED) since the 3D specification is not tied to any particular display technology.
To sum it up, the 3D Blu-rays seems promising-two 1080p pictures shown to each eye for a 3D effect. However to see the Blu-rays in 3D you will most likely need a new Blu-ray player and a new HD TV. So if you get a Blu-ray 3D for the same price, buy it to maybe watch in 3D in the future. For now you can enjoy the same movie/show in 2D.
